An interview with Dr. Ken Washenik
Dr. Ken Washenik was part of several multicenter clinical trials on PROPECIAŽ (finasteride)

OUTLOOK: How rigorous was the clinical study?

Dr. Washenik: Well, if you can imagine literally counting the hairs in the same 1-inch diameter circle of a man's scalp, you'll have a good idea of the rigors of the trial. This was done at various times during the study through independent photographic assessment. We also had a device to keep the subject's head in the same place for every photo, so that the pictures were standardized and consistent. These photos were sent to an expert panel of dermatologists who, based solely on the pictures, determined whether the subjects grew hair. Of course, I evaluated the patients, and their opinions as to their own hair growth were documented by questionnaire as well.

OUTLOOK: Did all your patients taking PROPECIA in the clinical studies experience hair growth?

Dr. Washenik: No. The results varied among my patients. At 6 months, people would come in and we'd look at their heads and many were very excited with their results. By Month 9, and especially by Month 12, you could recognize hair growth in those benefiting from PROPECIA. If PROPECIA does not work for you within 12 months, further treatment is unlikely to be of benefit.

OUTLOOK: How important is it to take a pill daily?

Dr. Washenik: I think taking PROPECIA daily is very important because you want to keep your DHT levels down without large swings in the therapeutic level. If you do forget to take a pill, just start back taking it once a day. Don't try to take the pills you missed. Just take one pill - that's all you need to do.

OUTLOOK: What are the sexual side effects most frequently associated with PROPECIA?

Dr. Washenik: In clinical studies, a small number of men experienced 1 or more of the following reversible side effects: less desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection, decrease in the amount of semen. Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of men and went away in men who stopped taking PROPECIA.

OUTLOOK: Would you recommend PROPECIA to a friend?

Dr. Washenik: Yes. I feel comfortable recommending PROPECIA to any male friends, family members, and patients who might benefit.
